Berlin Secrets with Luisa Ladu

Discover Berlin after a day at the trade fair: in the new Berlin Secrets series, FRUIT LOGISTICA team members offer personal insights into their city.

Portrait of Luisa Ladu

Berlin has so much more to offer than just appointments, exhibition stands and hotel rooms. FRUIT LOGISTICA visitors often only know the route between the airport and the trade show, missing out on the city's unique features in the process. Berlin Secrets invites you to discover the city through the eyes of FRUIT LOGISTICA team members with personal recommendations. Market Manager Luisa Ladu shows us her Schöneberg.

Luisa Ladu

My name is Luisa Ladu and I am the Market Manager responsible for sales and customer service in the machinery & technology and greenhouse technology sectors. Today, I'm going to take you to the Akazien neighbourhood in Schöneberg. Despite being a city of millions, Berlin's different districts – or neighbourhoods – feel anything but anonymous. Strolling along Goltzstraße and Akazienstraße, I discover all the things that make Berlin special to me. There is a relaxed, neighbourly atmosphere mixed with creative city life. As you stroll along, you can discover cosy cafés, good restaurants, hidden speakeasy bars, charming boutiques, stylish yoga studios, and small, inviting bookshops.

Coffee from the porter's lodge at Portier

Before setting off on a stroll through the Akazienkiez neighbourhood, I like to pick up a coffee from PORTIER, a charming café located in the former porter's lodge of the Postfuhramt West building. This small, listed building from the early 1930s has a very special charm, with its historic brick façade. The friendly team serves aromatic coffee, fresh juices and delicious biscuits. Through the original porter's window, snacks and drinks are served directly outside to waiting guests.

Korean diversity at WaWa

WaWa is a great place in Schöneberg to try Korean food. In this small, atmospheric restaurant, guests are served with exceptional friendliness. They are also given tips on how to enjoy the dishes authentically. For example, they are shown how to fill the salad leaves, dip them in the correct sauce, and combine the various side dishes with the main courses. My favourite dish is bibimbap: a bowl of rice with various fresh and pickled vegetables, a choice of tofu or meat and a spicy sauce that mixes well with everything. In summer, I like to sit outside and enjoy the sun with a Korean soft drink or wine.

Films on the big screen at the Delphie Filmpalast

The Delphi Filmpalast on Kantstraße in Charlottenburg is one of Berlin's most beautiful historic cinemas and is easily accessible from the exhibition grounds. It is one of the most important premiere venues and has been an official Berlinale venue for many years. As soon as you enter, you are transported to another time: the large auditorium, complete with balcony, heavy curtains and warm lighting, evokes the cinema culture of the 1920s and '30s. Meanwhile, the foyer exudes a warm, slightly nostalgic atmosphere. Anyone who wants to experience cinema as a cultural event again should visit the Delphi Filmpalast.

Glamour and good drinks at the Salut! Classic Bar

From the outside, no one can see inside the speakeasy. However, as soon as guests ring the doorbell, the friendly staff welcome them and show them to a table. Inside, they are greeted by a dim, cosy atmosphere, complete with dark wood, leather sofas, and carefully chosen details that hark back to the Golden Twenties. As befits a good cocktail bar, water is served at every table and refilled throughout the evening. Delicious snacks such as roasted corn are also available. The Salut! Classic Bar is renowned for its sophisticated cocktails, for which it makes its own syrups, liqueurs and even gin. My favourite is the Highland Yuzu, which the bar describes as zesty, fragrant and bubbly. For a non-alcoholic cocktail, I recommend the Pony's Neck.
