Berlin Secrets with Xiang Zhi

Discover Berlin after a day at the trade fair: in the new Berlin Secrets series, FRUIT LOGISTICA employees offer personal insights into their city.

Berlin has so much more to offer than just appointments, exhibition stands and hotel rooms. FRUIT LOGISTICA visitors often only know the route between the airport and the trade show, missing out on the city's unique features in the process. Berlin Secrets invites you to discover the city through the eyes of FRUIT LOGISTICA employees with personal recommendations. Xiang Zhi, the deputy director, is the first to share his personal Berlin moments.

Xiang Zhi

My name is Xiang Zhi and I am the deputy director of FRUIT LOGISTICA. I have been living in Berlin since 2018. This city has captured my heart with its openness, contrasts and quiet moments amidst all the energy. In this video, I will show you my favourite place and share more tips that are particularly close to my heart, such as places to arrive, recharge your batteries and enjoy yourself.

A relaxed start to the day at the Literaturcafé

When I have time in the morning, I like to start the day quietly. For me, the Literaturcafé is a place where Berlin suddenly slows down. Here, coffee, books and conversation go hand in hand.

While the Literaturcafé is currently undergoing renovations at its Wilhelminian-style villa near Kurfürstendamm, it has temporarily relocated to the International Club Berlin campus in Westend. Where the British Allies once played sports, I am now sitting with a view of the garden, drinking my coffee and sorting through my thoughts. This is a wonderful counterpoint, especially during an intense week of trade fairs.

Shopping with history at KaDeWe

One place that I consider inseparable from Berlin is the Kaufhaus des Westens, or KaDeWe. Since 1907, it has represented both tradition and change. It is easily accessible by public transport from the exhibition grounds and is always worth a visit in my opinion.

Almost every time I go there, I find something for a family member or friend. When my feet get tired, I like to retreat to the 7th-floor conservatory. Having a coffee break with a view over the city always feels a little bit special.

Inspiration between concrete and colour: Urban Nation

I can hardly imagine Berlin without street art. The Urban Nation Museum captures this essence, showcasing vibrant, political and thought-provoking art.

I particularly appreciate the fact that international artists come together here and share their perspectives. It's convenient for trade fair visitors, too, as the museum is open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays — perfect for clearing your head after a long day and taking in new impressions.

A bowl of pho to unwind at Monsieur Vuong

After a busy day at the trade fair, I often find myself heading to Monsieur Vuong in Mitte. This small, lively shop reminds me of the food stalls in Saigon: uncomplicated, authentic and full of flavour.

I highly recommend the pho. The rich broth, which is available with either beef or chicken, warms me up inside and gives me a new lease of life. For me, it's the ultimate comfort food and the perfect way to end a long day at work.

Berlin from above: a drink at the Rooftop One Bar

Sometimes, it's nice to finish off with a bird's-eye view. At the Rooftop One Bar in the Upper West district of Berlin, the city is literally at your feet. The view is expansive, the atmosphere is relaxed and the gin and cocktail selection is extensive.

My favourite is the classic Negroni: gin, Campari and vermouth. From up here, the city seems calmer, almost poetic. Best of all, the bar at Bahnhof Zoo is easily accessible by bus and train from the exhibition grounds.
