China is not only one of the world’s largest consumer markets for fruit and vegetables, but also a major producer. Yet only a small share of its production is exported. For companies supplying international markets, this puts the focus firmly on high quality standards, residue controls and reliable supply chains.

In Episode 9 of the second season of the FRUIT LOGISTICA Podcast, Fruitnet host Tom Joyce speaks with Dehai Yu, CEO of OneDayOne Group, about China’s role in international fresh produce trade and the opportunities emerging particularly in the European market.

The discussion focuses on products including pomelos, ginger, pears and garlic. Yu explains why European retailers place particularly high demands on quality and residue compliance, and how working with large numbers of small growers through cooperatives helps suppliers meet consistent standards. Long-term customer programmes and a forward warehouse in the Netherlands also help secure supply during periods of disruption.

The conversation also explores the risks of a business characterised by thin margins and demanding requirements – from extreme weather and long transport routes to geopolitical uncertainty. Yu therefore argues for long-term commitment rather than short-term investment. He sees particularly strong potential in ginger, with demand in Europe continuing to grow in his experience, especially for organic product.

How can Chinese exporters meet the demanding requirements of European markets? And which products and supply models offer the greatest potential for the future?
