Sustainability on the high seas: Smarter Shipping for Fresh Produce

Global shipping is under pressure: emissions, fuel efficiency, and rising demands for sustainability are reshaping fresh produce logistics. How can the industry chart a greener course?

The fresh produce business depends a lot on global shipping, but the rules of the game are changing as the trade comes under pressure to be more environmentally friendly. From carbon emissions and fuel efficiency to greener supply chains and logistics innovation, the industry must navigate a complex set of challenges. With the help of three highly experienced operators in shipping and freight forwarding, we look at the progress made so far, and consider the scale of the task ahead.

In the second episode of Season 2 of the FRUIT LOGISTICA Podcast, Carl Collen from Fruitnet speaks with three industry experts: Stefano di Paolo, President of Great White Fleet, Sabine van Vloten, Shypple, and Kirsten Orschulok, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Together, they explore how maritime logistics is evolving – and what it means for a more sustainable fresh produce supply chain.

A complex sustainability challenge

One thing is clear: shipping may be more efficient than air freight, but its environmental impact is far from negligible. The industry still relies heavily on fossil fuels, while inefficiencies such as port congestion and empty container movements add to emissions. The key question is where the biggest levers for change lie – and how quickly they can be implemented across global supply chains.

Technology, data, and better decisions

From alternative fuels to AI-supported route optimisation, innovation is already transforming maritime logistics. At the same time, data is becoming a key driver of change. Measuring CO₂ emissions is now possible for many companies, but turning insights into action remains a major challenge – especially when sustainability often comes at a cost.

The hidden role of refrigeration

One often overlooked factor in sustainable shipping: refrigerants. Reefer containers – essentially mobile fridges – are essential for transporting fresh produce, but the substances used for cooling can have a significant environmental impact. New approaches, including natural refrigerants, could significantly reduce emissions – if they can be scaled and adopted across the industry.

Innovation and its limits

From biofuels and shore power to new vessel technologies, the industry is exploring a wide range of solutions. But progress comes with challenges: balancing sustainability, cost efficiency, and operational feasibility remains a complex task. As the episode shows, there is no single answer – but rather a combination of technologies, collaboration, and long-term commitment.

So which solutions will truly make a difference – and how fast can the industry adapt?
